What Is The ROI From Taking A Project Management Workshop

Why Struggle

Why would you put time money and effort into a workshop without a clear payback? Most people do not have a clue as to what the payback is. For most of the participants, it is confidence. If you are starting out in project management you struggle as you are just not sure that what you are doing is correct. You know some stuff about project management but you are not confident about your knowledge.

A PM workshop is all about building your self-confidence in project management. Sure, you can read books, take on-line courses, and build up your knowledge, but most people need to be with real people. You need to understand not only your own strengths and weaknesses but to see the strengths and weaknesses of others as well. You need to realize that you are not alone. In a live workshop, you will lean things you could not have learned at home.

I Need To Get Away

So, the first ROI is self-confidence. The second ROI is time away from work. Getting disconnected from work will allow you to connect. It’s amazing how people stay in touch with the office while they are away at a workshop.

The time you spend traveling is time to disconnect. That helps you think. The time you sit in the workshop and then time after the day’s proceedings is again “think time”. If you speak to others and talk about your situation and discuss things: again it’s think, think, think.

When you are connected all the time to your e-mail and phone, you can’t disconnect. And hence you don’t make us of the downtime because you are always chained to your office; your life; to your troubles. Here you are on a “work vacation” and here you are squandering your time on e-mails and phone calls!

I know you’re thinking, how can the project run without me? People don’t expect you to respond to e-mails and answer the phone, they just want “Someone” to answer the phone. They want “Someone” to answer the e-mails. There is always “Someone” who can fill in for you for a few days. It’s not like you are gone for a month. If you got sick tomorrow, “Someone” would step in to fill the gap.

How Do You Do This?

The third ROI is connections. Typically the workshop exercises are designed for group participation which allows you to form connections. When you connect with others, you lay the foundation for implementation. The days spent at a workshop allows you to connect at a real level with the rest of the participants. When you get back to your office you can continue the connection through e-mail, phone, or in person.

Of course you can do this without having a workshop, but a workshop makes the experience richer, and the connections deeper.

The ROI Is?

So, by attending a Project Management workshop your ROI will be:

  1. Confidence
  2. Disconnection
  3. Connection.

This is the ROI that is invisible and not considered, that counts the most.
